The BJP on Wednesday attacked the West Bengal government and the INDIA bloc over the findings of a three-member committee formed by the Calcutta High Court to look into the violence that broke out in the state’s Murshidabad district, saying that it had “unmasked the so-called self-champions of secularism”.
Alleging that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its leaders had sought to propagate misinformation about the possibility of outsider involvement in the violence that took place during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on April 11, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asked if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would take action against MLA Mehboob Alam, who has been named in the committee’s report.
“The one thing which has become very clear is that no matter the kind of violence or politics around it, the attack is solely against the Hindu community. If Hindus were selectively killed in Pahalgam, in Murshidabad, it was Hindu homes and Hindu people against whom violence was inflicted,” Trivedi alleged at a press conference.
“After this, the West Bengal government has no face left to say that no violence had taken place there. It is now clear that violence took place in a planned manner, and that too at the instance of TMC leaders, and this was done keeping both religion and community in mind,” he added.
Demanding that Mamata Banerjee take action against her leaders in light of the findings of the SIT in the case, Trivedi said, “When will you take action against your own leaders?” He added that she also needed to tender an apology for statements made by TMC leaders allegedly seeking to “ridicule” the victims of the violence.
As The Indian Express has reported, the three-member committee formed by the Calcutta High Court to look into the violence in Murshidabad has said in its report that the police were “completely inactive” and also mentioned local TMC leader Alam.
It also said that miscreants destroyed a water bottle shop and looted the cash box containing Rs 12,000-13,000. A shopping mall located in Ward no 12 was also completely looted and closed, and 29 shops were affected in Ghoshpara, according to the report.
