WhatsApp, known for being free and easy to use, keeps adding helpful features like disappearing messages, chat locks, and support for multiple devices. Now, it’s working on a big privacy update that could change how we use the app.
For the first time, WhatsApp is planning to let users hide their phone numbers and use usernames instead. This means you might soon be able to chat with someone without sharing your mobile number, something many users have wanted for a long time.
This new feature was recently seen in a beta (test) version of the app by WABetaInfo. It’s not available to everyone yet, but it shows that WhatsApp is actively testing it and may release it soon. WhatsApp is working on a major privacy update that will allow users to chat using usernames instead of phone numbers. This means you’ll soon be able to create a unique handle, similar to what we see on Instagram or Telegram. When someone wants to message you and doesn’t have your number, they’ll see your username instead.
This feature will be especially useful in group chats or when connecting with strangers. WhatsApp is setting some simple rules for usernames, they must include at least one letter, can’t start with “www”, and can only use lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, or periods. Once your username is accepted, a confetti animation will confirm it.
If you change your username later, your contacts will be notified with a system message, just like when you change your profile photo or phone number. While it’s still unclear if users will be able to hide their phone number from existing contacts, WhatsApp will definitely hide it from new users who don’t have it. The platform is also adding a tool to check if a username is available, likely through WhatsApp Web. Though there’s no official launch date yet, the feature is in its final testing stage and could roll out soon, giving users more privacy and control.
