Palakkad Division confident of completing Mangaluru Junction station development work by April

Achieving over 80% physical progress in the development work under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) at Mangaluru Junction (MAJN) Railway Station, Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division is confident of completing all the sub-work before April 2025.

MAJN was among the four stations in Dakshina Kannada included under ABSS for development at an estimated cost of ₹19.32 crore following efforts by the then MP Nalin Kumar Kateel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had virtually inaugurated ABSS works across the country on August 6, 2023.

Widening of clogged approach roads to MAJN, from Naguri and Padil, both connecting Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway 75, were in advanced stages of completion when The Hindu visited the station on Friday (March 20, 2025). Nearly 7,000 sqmt expansive circulating area in front of the station entrance was concreted and beautified to facilitate vehicular movement, dropping and picking of passengers. A large 1,632 sqmt parking area for four-wheelers and two-wheelers was also nearing completion. Physical progress of these two sub works was pegged at 89% by officials.

Traditional architecture

The new entrance porch spanning 155 sqmt was almost complete adding beauty to the station and facilitating hassle-free entry and exit for passengers with 75% physical progress. Work on a 176 sqmt air-conditioned waiting hall and 11 sqmt restroom for disabled passengers too was under progress with 60% progress.

Traditional coastal architecture could be seen on the station facade that was being given a new look. Nearly 75% of the work was complete as on date. Work on one more 6 metre-wide foot overbridge connecting Platform 1 and Platforms 2-3 in addition to the existing three was fast progressing.

Platform shelters

Platforms 1, 2 and 3 (3,048.33 sqmt) were being resurfaced while full-length platform shelters were being provided for all the three platforms. Pillars were being erected to provide additional covers on these platforms. The platforms would also be provided with high mast lights, BLDC fans, mobile phone charging units and such other amenities to enhance passenger convenience.

Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi told The Hindu that the Division was confident of completing the ABSS Phase 1 works before April. As on date, 75% of financial progress too was achieved, he added.

As a transit hub, MAJN established on May 20, 1979, facilitates movement of 35 trains witnessing more than 6,700 passenger footfalls daily. The Junction connects various regions, including Kerala to the South, Maharashtra/Goa and the New Mangalore Port to the North and Bengaluru-Chennai to the East.
