Are you looking to test and refine your startup concept with proven entrepreneurial methods? This summer, the NSF I-Corps Northwest Hub is offering two distinct Regional Short Courses designed to help aspiring innovators transform their ideas into viable business propositions. Hosted by UC Davis Venture Catalyst, these virtual courses offer a structured, practical approach to validating STEM-based innovations through customer discovery.

Two Specialized Cohorts: AgTech and STEM Innovators

This year, participants can choose between two specialized cohorts. The AgTech-specific Cohort, offered in collaboration with Oregon State University, focuses exclusively on innovations in agricultural technology. Workshops for this cohort are scheduled for July 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 2:00-4:00 PM. Interested teams must apply by June 20, 2025.

The second cohort, the Generalist STEM Innovator Cohort, welcomes innovators across all areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Sessions for this generalist group occur on August 5, 12, 19, and 26, from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM. The application deadline for this cohort is July 17, 2025.

What Participants Can Expect

The NSF I-Corps Regional Short Courses provide a hands-on introduction to customer discovery, a critical step in any startup journey. This free virtual program requires participants to commit between 30-40 hours over several weeks, including attendance at all course sessions and active engagement outside class. Teams will conduct at least 20 customer discovery interviews, gaining valuable insights into their target market and the viability of their technology or product.

Participants will learn how to identify customer segments, define clear value propositions, and map out their market ecosystem. Additionally, each week teams will present their findings in concise, focused updates to their peers and instructors, sharpening their ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

Who Should Apply

These courses are designed primarily for teams of 2-4 members, including faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff from academic institutions, and community-based innovators in STEM fields. The NSF I-Corps Regional Short Courses are accessible to those without prior business training or commercialization experience, making them ideal for first-time entrepreneurs and academic researchers new to customer-driven market validation.

It’s important to note that while community-based teams are encouraged to participate at the regional level, only teams with intellectual property developed at universities or academic labs are eligible to advance to the National NSF I-Corps program, which provides additional training and funding opportunities.
