There is something about February when the winters melt away into soft spring, waiting for the warmth of summer to take over. The pleasant weather and clear skies urge you to travel and explore before the harsh weather sets in. This is why we planned Goa in February, making it our first trip of the year. Here, I begin with my experience of the heritage walk in Fontainhas Goa, often called the most Insta-worthy place of the old city.

What is Fontainhas?
Fontainhas is a cluster of 18th-century European-style houses painted in bright hues. They represent a mix of Portuguese heritage and Goan culture. Once the quarters of the resident Portuguese were occupied by locals gradually. Though the houses have undergone a major transformation, they still retain the European charm with arching balconies, pop-colored walls, French windows, and slanting rooftops.

A few walls have interesting colorful murals mostly with tropical flora, geometrical patterns and local culture.

Going back in time
The name Fontainhas is derived from Fonte Phoenix, a water tank constructed nearby by the Portuguese. Further, this area was founded by Antonio Joao De Sequeria, a well-settled rich Goan expatriate.

Historically, the neighborhood was divided by class, a typical practice during that era. The wealthy residents occupied hillside bungalows and the middle-income groups started living in the densely populated area in the plains, which is the gorgeous Fontainhas of present times.
Heritage walk in Fontainhas: Exploring the Old Goan charm
There is no starting point for Fontainhas. You can start from anywhere and keep walking through the lanes until you see the colorful homes. We parked our scooty near the library and started our walk from this stunning staircase.

Some old homes painted in peppy colors and worn-out facades, make gorgeous backdrops for photo-ops. Personally, this was one of my favourites.

We stumbled upon a supercool, quirky mural that depicts a typical Goan lifestyle. We had the most fun shooting with this. Hands down, this was very unique and among the most elaborate wall paintings.

During peak tourist season, the lanes get too crowded and noisy. Hence, several buildings have put up sign boards restricting photography or selfies. Photography and overcrowding have become a menace for the locals, so much so that certain restaurants and cafes also restrict taking pictures. Even the Goa tourism board has erected standees with rules and regulations for tourists to follow.
