The best part about The Netherlands that we loved this time was the ease with which you can travel around. Although this was our third visit to this beautiful country, on both earlier occasions we had only touched Amsterdam. But this time our trip was exclusively focused on Netherlands and exploring its lovely cities one by one. We were in Eindhoven for a week and did quite a few day trips from there. And one of them was Den Bosch, a cute city in The Netherlands.

Den Bosch is also known as ‘s – Hertogenbosch and is the capital of the province Noord – Brabant. It is the birthplace of famous painter Hieronymus Bosch and is the largest walled city in The Netherlands. The main attractions of the medieval city center of Den Bosch are the churches, canals and the wharves. But then you will also land up spending a lot of your time in the bustling cafes, boutiques and restaurants that you would bump into every few meters.

Take the Historical Boat Tour on the Binnendieze

Den Bosch is a city with a rich history. The Binnendieze waterway ran along the back of the houses and that is what makes the current form of the city unique with its street layout and narrow houses. Ships would transport their goods over the canals while the iron and textile industries used the water for their manufacturing processes. Drinking water for the residents also came from the canals as well.

As beautiful it is today there was a time when the inner city Binnendieze river was close to extinction as it was poorly maintained. Luckily in 1972, the historical inner city was designated a conservation area. And then the Binnendieze was restored bit by bit.

During this historical boat tour, our skipper guide Lex told us the fascinating stories about the restoration, the history of the city and the siege of Den Bosch in 1629. This is a tour which is certainly the most fascinating part of a visit to Den Bosch and it shows you all the aspects of the Binnendieze. Experience it with us till you are there yourself with your family and kids. Come it’s time to settle down in our electric boat and start the journey.

It was a journey we thoroughly enjoyed and more so as we kept learning more about this historical city. We had booked this tour in advance online on Dagje Den Bosch . And it is advisable to do so to get the time slot that would suit you. We were about to finish our 50 minute boat ride which was so very refreshing.

Have lunch at one of the Cafes or Restaurants

Visit the St. John’s Cathedral

The St. John’s Cathedral is a Catholic Church and a piece of classic Gothic architecture in The Netherlands. The rich and extensively decorated interior is a stand out feature of this masterpiece. It serves as the cathedral for the bishopric of ‘s – Hertogenbosch.

Den Bosch & Bossche Bollen

A trip to Den Bosch is not complete unless you indulge yourself with this famous pastry from its city of origin, ‘s – Hertogenbosch. Bossche Bollen is about 12 cm in diameter, filled with whipped cream and coated with chocolate fondant icing. Although I do not normally have any sweet stuff, yet just couldn’t resist the temptation. And then a coffee which is always my favorite. The best destination to enjoy your Bossche Bollen is “Royal” right in the heart of the city center. And then a whole lot of other confectionaries and snacks that you can enjoy here and even carry back some. Do check them out.
